2018 - My Year in Quotes

Updated: Jan 8

During 2018 I journaled daily as part of my mindfulness practice and personal development, which I intend on maintaining in 2019. I started each day by writing down the quote of the day from my Zen Page-A-Day Calendar created by David Schiller. I contemplated about the quote for a minute and then jotted my initial thoughts. I never missed a day believe it or not! On days when I knew I'd be on vacation, I journaled in advance. If you're looking into incorporating a daily mindfulness practice into your busy life, this was super easy and took no more than 5 minutes.

Some quotes impressed on me profound ruminations, and some quotes evoked as little as a word or a phrase. Either way, I put an asterisk or star next to quotes that really moved me. Below are the quotes that made me feel some type of way, which are then followed by my impressions or interpretations I wrote down for them.

"One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again." - Abraham Maslow

There is no right answer to what you do. But if you choose moving forward, choose growth. - KC

"If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to." - Lao-Tzu

We are literally changing every second when you think about it. DNA splits, cells divide. When someone changes, don't judge it. When you change, don't judge it. - KC

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience." - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Word! - KC

"We in our age are faced with a strange paradox. Never before had we so much information in bits and pieces flooded upon us by radio and television and satellite, and yet never before have we had so little inner certainty about our own being. The more objective truth increases, the more inner certitude decreases." - Rollo May

We live in a time of information constantly being shared between us - uploaded and downloaded. Because all this information is around us, we come to believe them as facts. Objective truths. But what about your truth? The subjective truths? The knowing you can only feel in your heart. Isn't it real as well? - KC

"Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without clinging to it or rejecting it." - Sylvia Boorstein

Word! - KC

"Despite what you may believe, you may disappoint people and still be good enough. You can make mistakes and still be capable and talented. You can let people down and still be worthwhile and deserving of love. Everyone has disappointed someone they care about. Everyone messes up, lets people down, and make mistakes not because we're inadequate or fundamentally inept but because we're imperfect and fundamentally human. Expecting anything different is setting yourself up for failure." - Daniell Koepke

Do your best always while being your authentic self. - KC

"I live my life based on two principles. One, I live as if today was my last day on earth. Two, I live today as I am going to live forever." - OSHO

You never know where life will take you nor will you know what will become. Live your best life as if tomorrow isn't promised. - KC

"What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?" - Vincent van Gogh

...Perhaps boring, uneventful, unspired... meaningless. - KC

"When you have to make a choice and you don't make it, that is itself a choice." - William James

Choosing not to do anything is very much a choice with potentially impactful consequences. Recognize opportunities that are for your highest good and act on them. Manifest your dreams rather than wait around for something to happen. Don't choose indifference. Listen to your needs and allow your voice to empower you. It's OK to say "no" when something doesn't feel right. Say "yes" if something resonates within. Also listen to your moral compass. Don't stand around watching someone get kicked down. Stand for the oppressed and stand against the oppressor. - KC

"We long for permanence but everything in the known universe - thoughts, weather, people, galaxies - is transient, but one we fight." - Sharon Salzberg

As the saying goes, the only thing that is constant is change. Everything has a flow because everything is energy. So don't let anything sit in stagnation. Let everything flow and simply go along with it. - KC

"A monk asked Master Haryo, 'What is the way?' Haryo said, 'An open-eyed man falling into the wall!'" - Zen Koan

When you being your spiritual way, you open your eyes to a spiritual awakening that feels like falling down a rabbit hole. Things you thought you knew - the domestication, constructs that ruled your life - crumble around as you start to realize that you can create your own reality. Your life actually forms a spiral by which you return to your center and go inward to explore/discover innate truths or expand outward to the world for experience and information gathering. Don't be afraid when you fall into the well. Remember, your eyes are wide open even though it may be dark and confusing. There is a way out. From the bottom of the well, look up and see the light of day. Face your shadow self. Grow from the experience. Climb out of the well as a whole different person. - KC

"We practice to learn letting go, not to increase our holding on. Enlightenment appears when you stop wanting anything." - Ajahn Chah

Releasing that which doesn't serve you, letting go of something from the past, letting go of attachments, etc. may be one of the hardest things to do right now, but it may be the only thing holding you back from the rest of your life. It's totally OK to let go. What's the worst that can happen? Don't you want to be free from pain and suffering caused by old patterns, relationships, job, etc.? - KC

"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all." - Oscar Wilde

What is the driving force that gets you out of bed every morning? What is your purpose in life? What keeps you busy while fulfilling your soul and bringing happiness to your heart? Once you understand what living is about, you'll realize that there is reason beyond just existing. Although if you choose to go through this lifetime just existing, then that's on you. - KC

"Our real nature is liberation, but we imagine we are bound. We thus make strenuous efforts to become free while, all the while, we are free." - Ramona Maharshi

The rules we live by are constraints made by society. Sure, there are moral and ethical rules that are implicit for the rights of all human beings. However, we also set rules in our own minds that prevent ourselves from reaching our highest potential. These rules revolve around fear. Often our fears and doubts are imagined, and we somehow convince ourselves that they're valid. Once we free ourselves from the fear of living, being who we want to be, trying new things, going for our dreams, etc., we'll realize that we had freedom all along. - KC

"The most courageous act is still to think for yourself aloud." - Coco Chanel

It's difficult being authentic when the world has expectations of you. Go against the grain. Think, feel, say. - KC

"Without a rope, people bind themselves." - Zen Saying

We often put unnecessary limitations on ourselves. We don't give ourselves enough credit. The fears we have are often irrational. The ability to let go, which allows us to move forward in our lives, isn't impossible. - KC

"There are ways but the Way is uncharted..." - Taoist Saying

It's not about the destination - you will get there somehow. Make the journey fun along the way at least! - KC

"Looking into the old well I see my own face then another behind it." - Merwin

We often put up a facade to hide our true feelings. It's when we look really deep into the well, beyond the surface level, we can see who we really are. Don't be afraid to see what lies beneath. - KC

"Life, for eternal us; is now." - EE Cummings

Life is today. Right now. Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. Right now. - KC

"Whatever your difficulties - a devastated heart, financial loss, feeling assaulted by the conflicts around you, or a seemingly hopeless illness - you can always remember that you are free in every moment to set the compass of your heart to your highest intentions... in fact, the two things that you are always free to do - despite your circumstances - are to be present and to be willing to love." - Jack Kornfield

I believe that our purpose in this human life is to experience love, both giving it and receiving it. - KC

"Flow with whatever may happen and let your mind be free. Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate." - Chuang Tzu

Life has a flow of energy. Don't fight that force. Let it freely flow and go along for the ride. Stay authentic while doing so by keeping yourself grounded and centered. - KC

"Do not try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist; use it to be a better whatever-you-already-are." - Dalai Lama

Be a better version of yourself. Don't try to be someone you're not. Grow, improve, develop all while staying aligned to your heart, mind, and soul. - KC

"Perhaps ultimately, spiritual simply means experiencing wholeness and interconnectedness directly; seeing that individuality and the totality are interwoven, that nothing is separate or extraneous. If you see in this way, then everything becomes spiritual in its deepest sense. Doing science is spiritual. So is washing dishes. It is the inner experience which counts. And you have to be there for it. All else is mere thinking." - Jon Kabat-Zinn

What it means to be spiritual is that we are all connected in the universe. An event elicits a response resulting in an outcome that may ripple out into further events, actions, and outcomes and so forth. Therefore create actions with the intention for the highest good of all. - KC

"When we let go of our battles and open our heart to things as they are, then we come to rest in the present moment. This is the beginning and the end of spiritual practice." - Jack Kornfield

One of the fundamental things I learned about my spiritual practices is being in stillness, which allows me to be in the present moment, When you are present, you are not concerned with stress of the past and worries of the future. You truly find the enjoyment of your life and appreciation of your breath that very second. It allows me to give gratitude and recognize how abundant my life really is. - KC

"Learning how to love is the good and the purpose of spiritual life - not learning how to develop psychic powers, not learning how to bow, chant, do yoga, or event o meditate, but learning to love." - Surya Das

Before anything else, you can't call yourself a spiritual person unless you learn to do everything in the frequency of love. Start by loving yourself because how can you love others with your glass half full? - KC

"When I lost my sight, people said I was brave. When my father left, people said I was brave. But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life. Don't you do the same?" - Anthony Doerr

You never know what someone else is going through. They're going through some shit just like you, so be kind to one another and support each other. - KC

"There's nothing surprising about a miracle. Why, it's a miracle every morning that I don't melt in my bath." - Pablo Picasso

Cherish every moment of your life as a miracle. It's a miracle you wake up in the morning... that you're breathing right now... that your heart beats. Give gratitude for your life! - KC

"It is important to expect nothing, to take every experience, including the negative ones, as merely steps on the path, and to proceed." - Ran Doss

I am thankful for it all: the experiences, people, etc. both positive and negative that happened in the past. I've made choices that defined certain moments during those times, but they don't dictate the path that can be now. - KC

"I have already lost touch with a couple of people I used to be." - Joan Didion

Don't be attached with how you were in the past. We are constantly changing. We weren't the same person we were yesterday. Either accept the person you are right now, but if you don't like it then change again for the better! - KC

"The self says, 'I am.' The heart says, 'I am less.' The spirit says, 'You are nothing.'" - Theodore Roethke

The self is ego. The heart reminds us to be less of it, or selfless. The soul strips the ego entirely. - KC

"We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness." - Thich Nhat Hanh

We separate ourselves because of our egos. When we come from a place of ego we make labels and pass on judgments on people, which bring forth fear, anger, and other negative feelings. Furthermore, our egos can also work against us and cause self-doubt and even self-sabotage as we compare ourselves to others. It's time to "awaken from the illusion of our separateness," which to me, means death of the ego. Dissolving our belief that our ego makes us feel safe. Becoming more self-aware and connecting with our highest selves. Truly loving yourself and knowing that you are enough. Showing empathy to others and respect for all life forms. - KC
